Perhaps this should be implemented as a plugin - so only those who want the stats will need to go through the expense. I really like the idea though

You're missing the point - when you're creating your own images (printscreen, open up an image editor, paste) and saving them (naming them, choosing a logical place to put them, waiting) can take ages to do, especially with lots of pictures. And only after that there's the ctrl-i part.

The keyboard macro workaround: Use a program that supports it (e.g. AutoHotKey / PhraseExpress). Add an instruction, which should say something like {copyhighlightedtext}{pastecopiedtext}, where the things in {} brackets will be specific to the program you're using.
Assign a hotkey to the instruction (like CTRL-B), and you're done. You might want to make this only work in Mnemosyne, because it might interfere with other programs.
This is only a workaround, and it'd still be very useful if Mnemosyne did it automatically.

How about something similar - multiple foreign words with the same meaning?

When learning you could just activate the Front-To-Back cards only. After learning those, you could then also select Back-to-Front cards as well.

I think after the txt file export is implemented, you could go to quizlet.com and import it there. Their website has a nice paper flashcard maker with a few different options.

If we wanted to do this in mnemosyne, I believe it might be possible to do it via a spreadsheet of some kind (like excel)?
